Fundamentals

Consensus estimate

An aggregate of a stated analyst estimate set for a specified metric and period. Coverage, timing, adjustments and aggregation methods can differ; consensus is not a guaranteed outcome.

Plain-English context

Put the definition to work.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Reported revenue of $120M is 4% below a $125M consensus estimate, even if revenue increased 20% from the prior year.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

An aggregate can hide dispersion, stale estimates and unlike accounting adjustments. Identify the provider, period and time of the comparison before interpreting a beat or miss.
